Canadian Emergency Relief Benefit (CERB)

 

The Canadian Emergency Relief Benefit (CERB) and how you can utilize these benefits:

Summary:

  • Tenants can apply to CERB on April 6th

  • If a tenant is getting a wage subsidy from an employer, they CANNOT apply to CERB

  • If a tenant has applied to E.I. they do not need to sign up for CERB, they are already set up

  • Even if a tenant does not qualify for E.I. they are still encouraged to apply

  • After registering for CERB at Canada.ca, if you select direct deposit you can expect to receive funds in 3-5 days after applying

  • Those who cannot apply online can call the CRA at 1 (800) 959-8281 for help over the phone, and they will receive their cheque in the mail in 10 days

  • After applying, you have to check in once a month to update your status so you continue to receive the benefit 

  • Minister Duclos told Canadians to apply to the CERB portal by birth month so as to not overload the system

  • JAN/FEB/MAR: April 6th, 2020

  • APR/MAY/JUN: April 7th, 2020

  • JULY/AUG/SEPT: April 8th, 2020

  • OCT/NOV/DEC: April 9th, 2020

 

CERB:

  • Intended for Canadians who are unable to work for reasons related to COVID-19

  • You cannot claim CERB if you quit your job voluntarily

  • This is not an income dependant benefit, everyone who is eligible will receive $2000 monthly up to 4 months. But entitlement will be determined on a month-to-month basis.

  • Minimum 15 years old, and have earned at least $5000 in 2019 or in the past 12 months from one or more of the following sources: 

  • Employment

  • Self-Employment

  • Maternity and/or parental leave EI benefits

  • Benefits paid under a provincial plan because of pregnancy and/or childcare of a new-born child or a child placed in their care for the purposes of adoption

  • Claiming CERB can only be done if you are not receiving ANY income

  • You’re not working for reasons related to COVID-19

  • You do not work for at least 14 consecutive days

  • You do not receive income from employment or other benefits
